How are street shemes set up in practice?
- Potential schemes are proposed by The Kettering District NHW Liaison Officer, Residents
or the local police-led Safer Community Teams
- The Liaison Officer then targets the homes in the proposed scheme(s) by letter drops.
Priority is given to areas recognised as crime hotspots.
- Should the response be considered positive enough, the Liaison Officer sets up a
meeting in a suitable venue close to the proposed scheme.
- The Liaison Officer addresses the meeting usually with a member of the relevant Safer
Community Team and, where possible, a Street Co-ordinator from a nearby scheme
- During the meeting, should residents wish to proceed, a Street Co-ordinator is appointed
- The scheme is officially set up when the Street Co-ordinator’s and other details
are registered with the local police, and NHW signs are erected at both ends of the
street.
- The police then have the Street Co-ordinator as a contact for passing on messages
and warnings about local crimes.
- All members receive a Welcome Pack giving up-to-date crime prevention measures and
NHW stickers for display on doors and windows.
- They also receive contact details for their own Street Co-ordinator, and for Jane
Calcott, the Kettering District NHW Liaison Officer, as well as for their relevant
Safer Community Team.
- For new schemes (August 2010 onwards) the Street Co-ordinator is the only holder
of the names, addresses, telephone nos. and, where relevant, the e-mail addresses,
for the scheme's members.
Anyone wanting to set up or enquire about a scheme in their own street should first
contact Jane Calcott on 101 Extn 4800.
