“Nottingham Knockers”
Named after a scam thought to originate in Nottingham. Young people travel across the UK targeting a town at a time. They knock at doors, may be claiming to be ex-convicts attempting to mend their ways, before trying to sell the householder every-day household products at high prices. Police advise residents to refrain from buying at the doorstep and not to buckle under pressure from such salespeople. Politely say that you never buy at the door as you’re actually closing it.
Deliveries - If your neighbour is away, at work, on holiday or in hospital, keep an eye out for deliveries, traders and meter readers. Don’t call out that no one is there! Have a quiet word with carriers and may be take the parcel in for your neighbour.
Open Windows - Be over-careful! An upstairs open loo window near a drainpipe is very accessible. Remember - many opportunist burglars are not over-weight middle-aged men, they’re very young, fit and thin lads and lasses - they do get through these windows!
Letterboxes - Have an agreement with a neighbour. When either of you are away then the other checks the other one’s letterbox each day and pushes those letters, packets and papers right through and out of sight.
Driveways - Another agreement that works well is letting your neighbour use your driveway when you’re on holiday. Gets the 2nd & 3rd cars and visitors cars off the road and it keeps your property “in use” and being watched by your neighbour.
